The announcement came via a tweet from PM Modi, where he spoke of the renewed vigor these pacts would bring to the longstanding friendship between the two countries.

Seven key MoUs signed
The visit, marking Modi’s first trip to Sri Lanka in his third term, follows productive talks with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Colombo. Among the highlights, the leaders oversaw the signing of seven Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering critical sectors such as defence, energy, digital infrastructure, health and trade.
A landmark defence cooperation pact—the first of its kind between the two nations—was inked, signalling a strategic shift aimed at enhancing maritime security and countering regional challenges. That apart, a tripartite agreement with the United Arab Emirates was signed to develop Trincomalee as an energy hub, alongside the virtual inauguration of the 120-megawatt Sampur solar power project, a joint venture between India’s National Thermal Power Corporation and Sri Lanka’s Ceylon Electricity Board.
