New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in association with the IIT Delhi has developed a light weight bullet proof jackets to save the lives of security personnel involved in security operations. The jacket has been named as ‘Abhed’ (Advanced Ballistics for High Energy Defeat).
“With possible weights of 8.2 kgs and 9.5 kgs for different BIS levels, these jackets are lighter than the maximum weight limits stipulated in respective General Staff Qualitative Requirement of the Indian Army. They meet the highest threat levels and provide all-round protection to the security personnel,” DRDO said in a statement.

The jackets have been made using polymers and indigenous boron carbide ceramic material. The DRDO said that the armour plates of the jackets have gone through all levels of trials and passed all highest levels of threat levels.
Jackets provide 360 degree protection.
What is significant is that these bulletproof jackets are light weight than the prescribed maximum weight limits requirement of the Indian Army. The DRDO claims that these jackets equipped with front and rear armours, provide a 360 degree protection.
These bullet proof jackets have been developed at the DRDO Industry Academia Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE) at IIT, Delhi. The central government has said it is ready to transfer the technology to three industries to manufacture the jackets.
