New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rainfall warning in Odisha and West Bengal for Tuesday as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal made landfall near Odisha’s Puri on Monday.
A deep depression is a more intense stage of a low-pressure system and typically precedes the formation of a cyclonic storm, according to the IMD.
The weather office has sounded ‘red alert, predicting ‘heavy to very heavy rainfall’ for 10 districts of Odisha till 8.30 am of Tuesday. These districts include, Puri, Koraput, Nawarangpur, Kadhamal, Nayagarh, Ganajam, Boudh, Malkangiri, Khurda and Bolangir. There is possibility of heavy rain in districts of Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Kendrapada, Angul and Jagatsinghpur, Sonepur too during the period, according to the IMD.
In view of the weather system, the state government has made arrangements for relief and rescue operations in the districts and directed officials concerned to take immediate measures to supervise and assist the district administration in relief measures. Schools and anganwadi kendras have also been shut in the wake of inclement weather.
Several rescue teams of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force, NDRF and Fire Service have been deployed in the districts that are likely to be affected by the weather system.
Rain forecast for these states
Meanwhile, the IMD has also forecast light to moderate rain across southern parts of West Bengal for the next two days. The MeT department has issued rain alert in South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura and Purulia districts.
Heavy rainfall has also been forecast for Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Gujarat for today. The IMD has also predicted heavy downpour in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttarakhand.
“Isolated very heavy rainfall very likely over East Uttar Pradesh on 10th & 11th; West Uttar Pradesh during 11th -13th; East Rajasthan on 11th & 12th; Haryana on 12th; Uttarakhand on 12th & 13th September,” the IMD said.
“Isolated heavy rainfall very likely over East Rajasthan during next 7 days; West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand during 09th -14th; East Uttar Pradesh during 10th -14th and over Haryana on 11th September,” it added.
