New Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for heavy rainfall across several regions in India, warning of potential flash floods, landslides, and mudslides in vulnerable areas of Jammu and Kashmir. Widespread rainfall is also expected to affect states across the country today, while heavy rainfall is predicted to lash Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
Northwest India
The IMD predicts light to moderate rainfall across Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, with isolated to scattered showers in Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, and Rajasthan. The national capital is expected to witness heavy rainfall on the August 20 and 21.
West and central India
Central India is set to witness widespread rainfall today, with isolated heavy showers predicted over Vidarbha, Marathwada, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. The IMD warns that these areas could experience localised flooding.
East and northeast India
In the eastern and northeastern parts of the country, light to moderate rainfall is expected across Bihar and the northeastern states. However, heavy rainfall is forecasted for Odisha and Jharkhand for today, while West Bengal may see very heavy downpours.
South peninsular India
The southern states, Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, are also predicted to receive widespread rainfall. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry are particularly at risk, with very heavy rainfall expected to lash these regions.
