New Delhi: As India continues to grapple with severe cold wave, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fog and snowfall alert for several states. A western disturbance currently lies over Jammu and adjoining northern Pakistan, while another fresh western disturbance is positioned over West Iran and its surrounding areas.
The western disturbances are expected to bring light to moderate rainfall and snowfall to Western Himalayan region from January 2 to January 3, with more intensity between January 4 and January 6.
Dense fog alert issued for Punjab, UP
The IMD has also issued warnings for several regions due to extreme cold conditions and dense fog. Cold day to severe cold day conditions are expected in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh on January 2.

Weather forecast for Northeast states
Northeast states, including Assam and Tripura, will be affected by fog till January 6. Ground frost conditions are also likely in isolated pockets of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura from January 2 to 3.
IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, particularly over South Tamil Nadu on January 2, due to a cyclonic circulation over Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal.
Western Himalayan region is expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall and snowfall, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad on January 5. Light to scattered rainfall is also expected to affect parts of Northwest India between January 4 and January 6.
Cold day conditions will persist in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Madhya Pradesh, with some areas facing severe cold day conditions. Ground frost is also likely in the northeast regions, including Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
