India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy rainfall and snowfall for Western Himalayan region from January 3 to 6. Light to scattered rainfall will occur initially, intensifying to widespread rain and snow on January 5 and 6. According to IMD, heavy snowfall is expected in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad during this period, along with isolated thunderstorms and lightning.
Plains in northwest India, including Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, may experience light rainfall and dense fog. A gradual rise in minimum temperatures by 2-3°C is likely over northwest India, while central and eastern India will remain steady before a similar rise later in the week. Dense fog and ground frost are expected in several northeastern states and parts of Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh during late-night and early-morning hours.
Forecast for Western Himalayan region and Northwest plains
From January 3 to 4, light to scattered rainfall and snowfall are expected in Western Himalayan Region. The intensity is predicted to increase to scattered and fairly widespread rainfall and snowfall from January 5 to 6.
Heavy rainfall is likely in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on January 5 and 6, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in some areas.
The plains of northwest India may see light isolated rainfall between January 4 and 6. Minimum temperatures are set to rise gradually by 2-3°C in this region over the next five days. Dense fog will prevail in isolated pockets during late-night and early-morning hours, particularly in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and West Uttar Pradesh.
Forecast for Central and East India
No significant change in temperatures is expected over central and eastern India for the next three days. A gradual rise of 2-3°C is likely thereafter. Dense fog is also predicted in parts of Madhya Pradesh during the night and morning hours on January 3.
Dense fog conditions are likely in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from January 3 to 6. Ground frost is expected in isolated areas of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram on January 3.
In Maharashtra, minimum temperatures are expected to fall by 2-3°C over the next two days before stabilizing. Gujarat will not see any significant temperature changes over the next five days.
