New Delhi: Delhi Police are searching for Aam Aadmi Party MLA Amanatullah Khan from Okhla constituency after he was accused of leading an attack on police officers in Jamia Nagar, prompting Khan to write a letter to top cop stating, “I am in my assembly constituency, I have not fled anywhere. Some people from Delhi Police are implicating me in a false case…”.
The incident has sparked a political row, with Khan accusing the police of a cover-up.
An FIR has been lodged against Khan, charging him with obstructing police duty, manhandling officers, and issuing threats after he along with his supporters allegedly freed one attempt to murder accused from police custody in Jamia Nagar area of Okhla village on Monday. He faces charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), including those related to obstructing justice, threatening public servants, and assault.
The incident unfolded on February 10th when the Delhi Police Crime Branch went to Jamia Nagar to arrest an individual named Shavej Khan, wanted in a 2018 attempted murder case. According to the police, Amanatullah Khan, MLA Okhla, arrived with supporters and interrupted Shavej’s arrest.
The FIR alleges that Khan and his supporters not only threatened the police, asserting they held no regard for courts or law enforcement but also physically assaulted the officers and helped Shavej Khan escape from the police grip.
Khan, however, insists the police are trying to frame him to hide their own mistake. He claims that Shavej Khan had already secured bail and had shown the police his papers. Khan’s letter to the Delhi Police Commissioner accuses the force of creating a false narrative to deflect blame.
“The person whom Delhi Police had come to arrest has already got bail. When the person showed his papers, the police are implicating me in a false case to hide their mistake,” Khan said in his letter.
Police visited Khan’s residence on Monday as part of their ongoing investigation. Khan has been absconding since the alleged incident and remains the subject of a police search. He faces charges under sections 221, 121(1), 132, 191(2), 190, 263(b), 351(3), and 111 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).
This incident comes just days after Amanatullah Khan won Delhi Assembly election from the Okhla constituency for a third consecutive term, defeating his BJP opponent by a huge margin.
