IIT-Kharagpur student found dead in hostel room, probe begins

Kharagpur: In a shocking incident, a student of IIT-Kharagpur was found dead in his hostel room. As per the police, he was found hanging by his parents who had come to visit him on Sunday. Expressing shock over the incident, the institute described him as an academically gifted student.

Sharing details about the incident, the police said that the student, who has been identified as Shaon Malik, was a third-year student of Electrical Engineering. His family members and other students were forced to open the door after not receiving his response despite repeated calls. Malik had spoken to his parents the previous night when he seemed to be perfectly normal.

While the post-mortem of the body has been conducted, the process was also videographed. Meanwhile, IIT -Kharagpur said in a statement, “With a sense of utter shock, the students, staff, and faculty members deeply mourn the sudden loss of Sharon Malik, a third-year student from the Department of Electrical Engineering. He was found dead in Azad Hall of Residence premises on the morning of January 12.”

It added, “Upon discovery of the incident, the campus security and medical teams were immediately alerted… The police are conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Malik’s death. The institute is fully cooperating with the authorities.”

The student was known for intelligence, and dedication: IIT-Kharagpur

“He was known for his intelligence, dedication, and promising future in the field of Electrical Engineering. The institute is devastated by this tragic event. Our foremost priority at this moment is to extend our heartfelt condolences and support to Malik’s family and friends. We are providing all necessary assistance to help them through this incredibly difficult time,” the statement said further.
