New Delhi: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has raised serious questions about the situation in Bangladesh, strongly condemning violence and human rights violations in that country.
Questioning the arrest of a religious leader (without naming Iskcon monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu), she said, “A prominent leader of the Sanatan religious community has been unjustly arrested. I demand his immediate release.”
Sheikh Hasina, who is the President of the Awami League of Bangladesh and daughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has also condemned the murder of a lawyer in Chattogram, and stated that the criminals involved in this incident should be immediately apprehended and punished.
Sheikh Hasina stated, “A lawyer who went to fulfill his professional duties was beaten to death. This act is terrorism, and those involved in it should be severely punished. This incident is a serious violation of human rights.” Hasina targeted the Yunus government, which came to power “unconstitutionally”, and said that if this government fails to punish the perpetrators, it will also be held accountable for violations of human rights.
‘Ensuring religious freedom of all communities is extremely important’
She also condemned the attacks on religious minorities. Referring to the incident of a temple being set on fire in Chattogram, Sheikh Hasina stated that ensuring religious freedom and the security of all communities is extremely important. The former Bangladesh PM mentioned that there have been previous incidents of attacks, vandalism, and looting on mosques, temples, churches, homes of the Ahmadiyya community, and other religious sites.
‘Attacks on Awami League leaders anti-justice’
Sheikh Hasina said that after the murder of countless leaders, workers, students, and members of law enforcement from the Awami League, they are now being continuously harassed. She termed these activities as ‘anti-justice’ and strongly condemned them. She pointed out, “Those who have seized power are failing in every area. They are neither able to ensure the supply of basic necessities nor the safety of the common people. I strongly condemn these atrocities being committed directly and indirectly against the general public.”
Appeal to the public for unity
Sheikh Hasina appealed to the people of the country to stand united against terrorism and extremism. She said, “Ensuring the safety of the lives and property of the common people is most important. We must come together to oppose such acts.” The statement comes amid growing political instability, religious violence, and human rights violations in Bangladesh. It is seen as part of a strategy to send a message to the public while also exerting pressure on the caretaker Yunus government.
