Hyderabad: The works on at least six flyovers and road over-bridges (RoBs) which were started under the Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP) have not reached completion due to lack of funds. These overbridges and flyovers which are located in different parts of the city have become a cause of inconvenience to the people. As much as Rs 200 crore funding is required by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to accomplish the work.
The flyover are located at Shipa layout, Gachibowli Junction, Nalgonda X Roads-Owaisi Junction, Aramghar-zoo park and Uppal junction. The road over bridges are being constructed at Falaknuma and Shashtripuram.
As per a report by The New Indian Express, the SRDP-I had proposed 42 projects out of which, six projects are in different stages of construction while rest 36 have been completed. The funds for the SRDP-I were raised through rupee term loans, municipal bonds and bank loans for addressing fund shortage.
GHMC not in condition to take new loans
GHMC is has borrowed to its full capacity considering its income and therefore it is not in a position to demand for new loans as it is not even able to repay its previous loans. Due to this the construction of six flyovers is lagging. There are additional local problems in some areas adding up to the problem. According to GHMC, they are trying their level best to get the projects completed on time.
Under constructed projects causing inconvenience
The SRDP was planned to cover major traffic corridors at an estimated cost of Rs 5,937. It was expected to address the issues regarding increasing traffic loads and congestions in the city. The delay in completion of the project is proving to be a cause of inconvenience for the people driving on the route where the work is undergoing. The road is full of potholes from Chanchalguda jail to Owaisi junction and towards Champapet.
