New Delhi: Tensions at the University of Hyderabad are escalating as students protest against the Telangana government’s plan to auction 400 acres of land for an IT park. Several demonstrators have been detained by police, and BJP leaders visiting the site were also held. Minister KTR criticized the Congress government for what he referred to as “green murder,” citing environmental concerns.
In response to allegations about land demarcation, the UoH registrar clarified that only a preliminary inspection had been conducted.
This morning, a BJP delegation was blocked from visiting the Hyderabad Central University campus after student protests against the redevelopment of the nearby 400 acres clashed with police in Congress-ruled Telangana.
The BJP’s floor leader, Alleti Maheshwar Reddy in the Telangana Assembly, was scheduled to lead a delegation when he informed that police had prohibited him from leaving his house without prior notice. Other BJP leaders reportedly faced similar restrictions. Videos showed police detaining BJP MLAs outside the party’s state headquarters to prevent them from reaching the university.
“The government can obtain money from wherever it wants, but it cannot create more land adjacent to the university. They should abandon their plans to sell those 400 acres of land,” BJP MLA Payal Shankar told news agency ANI.
The BJP’s involvement in the situation has escalated the political controversy, especially after the BRS accused the police of mistreating the protesting students.
In response, the government has deployed a significant police presence around the university campus, as the Students Union pledged to continue their protest and boycott classes until both the bulldozers and police personnel are removed from the area.
