New Delhi: Rekha Gupta has been selected as the next Chief Minister of Delhi, marking a historic moment for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Celebrations erupted following the announcement, with senior BJP leaders and even political rivals from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) extending their congratulations.
Gupta becomes the fourth woman to hold the position of Delhi’s Chief Minister, following in the footsteps of Sheila Dikshit, Sushma Swaraj, and Atishi.
Following the BJP’s announcement, supporters gathered outside Gupta’s residence to celebrate her victory. BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad confirmed that Gupta was elected unanimously by the legislative party.
Expressing her gratitude, Rekha thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President J.P. Nadda, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva and the central observers, Ravi Shankar Prasad and O.P. Dhankar, for their support.
Atishi, AAP leader and former Chief Minister of Delhi congratulated Gupta while also emphasising the BJP’s responsibility to fulfill its campaign promises. Atishi expressed her party’s willingness to collaborate with the BJP for the betterment of Delhi and praised the growing presence of women in politics.
