New Delhi: Mohamed Salah’s recent winner against Brighton served as more than just three points sending a powerful reminder of the irreplaceable quality he brings to Liverpool. His performance not only took Liverpool to the top of the Premier League but also ignited the conversation around his future at the club. With contract talks ongoing, the Egyptian superstar along with key players Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk, is facing an uncertain future as all three contracts are set to expire at season’s end.
This trio has been instrumental in Liverpool’s success so far. However, their contract is ending the season after legendary manager Jurgen Klopp left the club. The club is at a crossroads that could reshape their squad’s foundations.
Salah is Liverpool’s fifth-highest all-time scorer with 220 goals in 364 games and has become synonymous with Anfield magic. He is just eight goals behind Billy Liddell. His recent goal was the 48th time he had netted a winning goal in the Premier League. Arne Slot described it as “A Mo Salah special”. He even said that it’s not the first and not even the last time Salah will score from that position.
Despite being a winger, he has achieved milestones that only elite Premier League forwards dream of, establishing himself as a Liverpool legend. Since joining Liverpool, he has been a revelation. The three-time Premier League Golden Boot winner’s recent social media post hinted at his emotional connection with the club, underscoring his loyalty and the looming uncertainty. The phrase “no matter what happens” stirred speculation among fans and fueled concerns over whether a new deal is within reach or not.
Top of the table is where this club belongs. Nothing less. All teams win matches but there’s only 1 champion in the end. That’s what we want. Thank you for your support last night. No matter what happens, I will never forget what scoring at Anfield feels like. pic.twitter.com/c2rVHQxjK8

Are the Reds worried about losing their trio?
The 32-year-old’s importance to the club is clear by the sheer amount of goals and assists he has pitched in for Liverpool. Along with Salah, both Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk have also been integral parts of the team. When the trio plays together, the win percentage of the Reds is 70% and drops to 59% when they don’t, proving how crucial they are to maintaining the club’s competitive edge.
The trio have formed the core of one of Liverpool’s greatest teams, reaching the Champions League final on three occasions and winning it once, winning their only Premier League title and also an FA Cup and two League Cups. Salah’s goalscoring prowess has been consistently matched by Van Dijk’s defensive dominance and Alexander-Arnold’s creative contributions from right-back forming a synergy that has made the Reds formidable over the years.

Salah was Liverpool’s most frequently used player under Klopp, followed closely by Alexander-Arnold in second place and Van Dijk, now the club’s captain, in fifth. Since Alexander-Arnold’s Premier League debut in December 2016, he has set up 59 goals, which is the fourth-highest in the league, and also created the third-most chances, with only James Ward-Prowse and James Maddison scoring more than his six free-kicks during that period. Meanwhile, eight defenders have scored more goals than Van Dijk, and he boasts the seventh-highest win percentage in Premier League history.
Potential destinations
Alexander-Arnold has been linked with Real Madrid and may attract a strong offer, especially as Dani Carvajal has recently undergone ACL surgery, leaving Madrid likely in need of a right-back for the next 18 months, an opportunity where Trent would certainly be a fitting option.
While Liverpool fans remain hopeful, there is a slight concern that Salah might be lured by offers from Saudi Arabian clubs, especially after Liverpool turned down a substantial £150 million bid in the summer of 2023, choosing not to make a major decision two years before his contract ends.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot appears to be unbothered by the uncertainty as he acknowledged the players’ exceptional performances amid contract talks. He maintains confidence that the discussions will yield a positive outcome stating, “For me the contract situation could become a problem if the players don’t perform as well as they do at the moment.”
For Liverpool retaining Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold is not just about preserving squad depth but it’s also about safeguarding an era. The fans’ faith in Salah’s commitment and his pursuit of breaking more records at Liverpool will weigh heavily in these discussions. Yet as the season progresses Liverpool will need to act decisively to balance their squad’s future with the inevitable transitions that come with football’s elite players.
