New Delhi: School teachers in Mumbai have welcomed the recent decision of the Maharashtra government to make Hindi as a mandatory language for students from classes 1 to 5 for both Marathi and English medium schools. The Maharashtra school education department issued a Government Resolution on April 16.
The resolution included the details about the phase-wise implementation of the new curriculum based on the recommendations of the New Education Policy 2020. It was noted that schools across the state follow the three-language formula except the Marathi and English medium schools.
“This is a very appropriate decision. If anyone (student) learns Hindi’s grammar then they will be a great scholar,” one teacher told TV9 Bharatvarsh.
“There won’t be much trouble for students in learning because Hindi and Marathi fall under the Devanagiri script. Even the ones teaching won’t find it much difficult,” another teacher said.
“We have come from Uttar Pradesh but we have learnt Marathi. I can speak it better and I do teach the language as well,” he added.
Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) recently put out posters in Mumbai, showing their strong opposition to the implementation of Hindi in schools. The poster included the image of Thackeray with the tagline written as ‘Aamhi Hindu Aahet Pan… Hindi Nahi’ (We are Hindu but not Hindi).
One of the teacher said that people from other states have settled in Maharashtra and also learnt Marathi. Similarly, he believes that it shouldn’t be any problem for Marathi-speaking students to learn the popular language.
“Hindi is a national language and there is nothing wrong in learning a language. I don’t think its wrong to learn Hindi because it is spoken across India,” a teacher said.
“I accept that in Maharashtra many people speak Marathi. Marathi and Hindi languages have a relationship of sisterhood. I don’t think there should be any politics on this” he added.
