Dehradun: Uttarakhand is soon to launch helicopter services connecting Dehradun to Bageshwar, Mussoorie, and Nainital by the end of this month, once the local body elections are over on January 23.
Additionally, the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA) is working on finalizing agreements with selected private helicopter companies to make these services operational soon.
Operations to begin after local body elections
The new air-routes for Heli-services, starting from Dehradun, aim to enhance accessibility to these popular tourist spots—Bageshwar, Mussoorie, and Nainital. The formalities for the service are nearing completion, and operations are expected to begin once the code of conduct for the civic elections is lifted. According to Sonica, CEO of UCADA, “We are in the last leg of completing all the formalities. The tender has already been floated, and the union government will issue the letter of intent to the selected Heli companies. We may get the approval in the coming 10-15 days, and services can be started in the last week of January or the first week of February.”
Helipads being prepared in Bageshwar and Nainital
The state agency for civil aviation, UCADA, has been actively coordinating with private helicopter operators to ensure a smooth launch. Pawan Hans has been selected to operate flights between Dehradun and Bageshwar, while Heritage Aviation will manage services to Nainital. Mussoorie will also be part of this initiative, further increasing connectivity within the state. The authorities are also finalizing ticket prices, which will be announced soon. To facilitate this initiative, helipads are being prepared in Bageshwar and Nainital, ensuring that the required infrastructure is in place before the services commence.
A boost for tourism and enhanced connectivity
In the last few years, Uttarakhand has focused on enhancing air connectivity within the state. The introduction of helicopter services is expected to significantly boost tourism in Uttarakhand by making these scenic destinations more accessible. Pilgrimage tourism will also benefit, as devotees will find it easier to reach these regions. Additionally, the helicopters can be used for rescue and relief operations during natural disasters, ensuring timely assistance to affected areas.
The state government is optimistic that this initiative will not only enhance connectivity but also provide a new dimension to tourism and disaster management in Uttarakhand.
