New Delhi: In respoinse to escalating hostilities in the Middle East, security at the Israeli Embassy in New Delhi has been intensified following Iran’s missile barrage on Israel thisa past Tuesday. The Delhi police have ramped up their patrolling efforts around the embassy, emphasising that their teams have always maintained a presence at the site.
Abdul Kalam Road, which houses the embassy, has been completely sealed off with barricades by the Delhi Police. Acess to the area is tightly controlled, with vehicles being stopped for through checks, and vistors asked the purpose of the visit.
The police has also restricted the media from approqaching the embaswsy premises, with videography strictly prohibted citing the security concerns. The beefed security comes in the wake of last year’s conflict between Israel and Hamas, which was triggerred by a surprise attack on october 7, leading to an ongoing war in Gaza.
Earlier this August, The Delhi plice reviewed security of Israeli Embassy and the nearby Chabad House afte the inttelligence warnings emerged following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Previous incidents have underscored the need for vigilance; suspected IED blasts near the embassy were reported in 2021 and agin in 2023, although there was no injury in both the incidents.
The recent missile attack on Israel from Iran marked a significant eacalation in the Israel’s multi cornered war, with Tehran launching 181 ballistic missiles at Israel amid iongoing military operation against Hamas in Gaza. In retailation, Israel has uissued a strern warning regarding severe consequences for Iran’s action.
This latest Iranian ofeensive follows Israel’s airstrike that reportedly killed Hezbollahh leader Hasssan Nasrallah at his headquater in Beirut, Lebnon. Just last week, Israel initiated what it described as a “localised and targeted’ ground offensive against Hezbollah positions along its northern border, aiming to dismantle anty remaining infrastructure linked to the millitant group.
