Agartala: At least 22 people lost their lives due to heavy rains in Tripura over the past few days, while two others remain missing. The continuous downpour has caused widespread destruction.
Around 65,400 people sought shelter in 450 relief camps across the state after their homes were severely damaged.
In response to the devastating situation, Chief Minister Manik Saha took to Facebook to express his sorrow. He said that ten people lost their lives in landslides at Ashwini Tripura Para and Debipur in Santirbazar. “I express my condolences to the families of the deceased. This is an irreparable loss,” he said. The state government has also announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the families of each person who died.
Widespread destruction across state
The impact of heavy downpour has been felt across the state, with heavy damage to infrastructure, agricultural fields, houses and livestock. The number of affected residents has climbed to about 17 lakh.
Landslides have been a major issue, with over 2,000 reported across Tripura. Of these, 1,789 locations have been cleared, and restoration efforts are underway in the remaining areas. In addition, two helicopters provided by the central government are being used to rescue stranded people in Gomati and South Tripura districts.
Assam rifles lead rescue operations
Assam Rifles, along with their riflewomen, have been leading the rescue operations in the state, evacuating more than 750 people. Four specialised rescue teams have been deployed to various locations, including East Kanchanbari, Kumarghat, Unakoti district, Amarpur in Gomati district, Bishalgarh, Sipahijala and Tripura West.
Despite ongoing efforts, the situation remains critical as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted more heavy rains over the next few days.
