Chandigarh: The voting for Haryana Assembly polls began across 90 seats early today. While the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is looking for a third successive term, the Congress is looking to make a comeback after almost a decade. The results will be announced, along with that of Jammu and Kashmir, on October 8.
Sharing further details, the EC said that a total of 2,03,54,350 voters will exercise their franchise on Saturday. Of them, a total of 8,821 voters who are over 100 years of age will also cast their votes which will be held till 6 pm. Of the 1,031 candidates, whose fate will be decided today, 101 are women. A total of 464 candidates are also contesting as independents. The commission has set up 20,632 polling stations across the state.
Notable candidates
According to the Chief Election Commission (ECI), a total of 1027 candidates are going to the polls, with over 2 crore people eligible to cast their votes. Among the major candidates in the fray include Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini (Ladwa), Leader of Opposition Bhipinder Singh Hooda (Garhi Sampla-Kiloi), INLD’s Abhay Singh Chautala (Ellenabad), JJP’s Dushyant Chautala (Uchana Kalan), BJP’s Anil Vij (Ambala Cantt), Capt Abhimanyu (Narnaund) and O P Dhankar (Badli), AAP’s Anurag Dhanda (Kalayat) and Congress’ Phogat (Julana).
The authorities have deployed over 30,000 police personnel and 225 paramilitary companies to maintain law and order and avoid any kind of untoward incident during polls. An adequate number of police forces have also been deployed at the polling booths and other important locations.
