New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s reported willingness to lead the INDIA opposition alliance has sparked a wave of reactions from fellow members. While some express support for her taking on a more prominent role, others maintain a cautious stance, highlighting the complex dynamics within the coalition.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Supriya Sule welcomed the possibility, stating that Banerjee is an integral member of the alliance and that her assuming more responsibility would be viewed favourably. “Mamata Banerjee is absolutely an integral part of the INDIA alliance. In a vibrant democracy, the opposition has a big role and responsibility, so if she wants to take more responsibility, we will be very happy,” Supriya Sule told news agency ANI.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi echoed similar sentiments, highlighting Banerjee’s successful track record in West Bengal where she has kept the BJP out of power. Chaturvedi’s comments point to Banerjee’s political strength and ability to effectively counter the BJP’s influence, showcasing her as a potential leader who has shown the ability to be successful. She emphasised that a decision on the alliance leadership will be taken collectively by senior leaders during upcoming INDIA bloc meetings.
“She has put forward her statement. Because she has shown a successful model in West Bengal where she has kept the BJP away from power and implemented good welfare schemes…her election experience and fighting spirit, accordingly she has shared her interest. Whenever the INDIA bloc meeting takes place, our senior leaders will together take a decision,” Priyanka Chaturvedi said.
The discussion regarding Banerjee’s leadership has gained momentum in the wake of recent setbacks for the Congress party in the Maharashtra and Haryana assembly elections. Several TMC leaders had earlier suggested Banerjee for the position, citing the Congress’s underperformance. TMC MP Kirti Azad, in a December 3rd statement, praised Banerjee’s political acumen, strong track record in West Bengal, and ability to unite diverse groups. Azad’s comments reinforce the perception of Banerjee as a strong leader capable of effectively challenging the BJP, which is seen as the biggest competitor in India’s political spectrum.
“Mamata Banerjee has a 100 percent record. Whenever Prime Minister Narendra Modi faced a humiliating defeat, it was only in West Bengal… Whenever he comes to insult Bengal and its honour, her vote share increases,” Azad said.
TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee’s November 26th statement advocating for a single strong leader to lead the INDIA bloc after the Congress’s electoral defeats further fueled the discussion. While the responses to Banerjee’s purported interest in leadership vary, experts believe that her potential role within the INDIA alliance remains a significant factor in the opposition’s strategy for the upcoming elections. The final decision, however, will depend on the collective agreement of the alliance’s constituent parties.
“The Congress has failed to achieve the desired result either in Haryana or in Maharashtra. We had tremendous hope from the Congress that they would do better. The INDIA alliance is there, but the expected result could not be achieved. And there is a great failure on the part of the Congress to achieve the result… Today it is necessary; if you want to fight against the BJP, the INDIA alliance should be stronger. And to make it stronger, one leader is required. Now who can be the leader? That’s the core question. Congress has done it. All experiments have been done, but they have failed…” Mamata Banerjee had said.
