New Delhi: Ever since the alleged Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) scam came to light in Karnataka, there have been whispers about chief minister Siddaramaiah possibly stepping down. Now, state home minister G Parameshwara has reignited speculation about a potential leadership change with his recent remarks, expressing that he would be “happy if he were promoted”, a Times of India report mentioned.
Parameshwara was responding to an earlier comment by cooperation minister KN Rajanna, who had voiced support for his “promotion.” Parameshwara stated, “I would also be very happy in that case.” If appointed, he would become Karnataka’s first Dalit chief minister.
Strong chief ministerial contender
Although Parameshwara had previously downplayed the idea of himself as a candidate for the chief minister’s position, ongoing speculation suggests that, as the most senior Dalit leader after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, he could emerge as a strong contender if Siddaramaiah is compelled to step down due to legal issues.
While DK Shivakumar has been eyeing the chief minister’s role, with his supporters claiming from the beginning that Siddaramaiah would hand over the position halfway through his term, the Congress is reportedly reluctant to appoint him due to the various corruption allegations against him, a report by the Indian Express mentioned.
Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah made an unusual visit to a temple on Friday, a move that has raised eyebrows. Known for typically avoiding temples, Siddaramaiah visited Sri Malatesh Temple in Devaragudda, Ranebennur taluk.
‘Raj Bhavan Chalo’ today
In the meantime, the Congress party will proceed with its ‘Raj Bhavan Chalo’ protest on Saturday. The march aims to put pressure on Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot to reconsider his decision to allow the prosecution of Siddaramaiah. The Congress is planning protests across all districts while continuing its legal battle. Should these efforts fail, party members are considering appealing directly to President Murmu.
