Ahmedabad: The heavy rains in Gujarat have claimed 25 more lives in the state. The death toll due to rain-related incidents reached 35, showed the latest data. The number of deaths in the state have happened in the past 3 days, starting Monday.
More than 17,000 people rescued
The National Disaster Response Force and the State Disaster Response Force are carrying out relief and rescue operations in the state. So far, 17,800 people have been evacuated from the flooded areas. Wednesday was the fourth consecutive day of rains in the state.
PM Narendra Modi had also called up the Chief Minister of the state, Bhupendra Patel to take stock of the flood situation in the state. Apart from the SDRF and the NDRF teams, the Army, Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Air Force are also carrying out rescue and relief work in the state.
IMD records 30 cm rainfall in some areas of Gujarat
The India Meteorological Department said that it recorded a maximum of 30 cm of rainfall in some areas of Gujarat, located in Saurashtra and Kutch regions. The maximum 30 cm was recorded in Kutch’s Naliya, while Abdasa also located here saw 27 cm rains in the past 24 hours. Some places in Devbhoomi Dwarka received up to 29 cm of rains in the last 24 hours, according to the latest data of the weather department.
The IMD also said that a deep depression was formed over Saurashtra and Kachchh and moved slowly during the past 6 hours and about 60 km N-NW of Bhuj (Gujarat). It will move West-South West and emerge into the North East Arabian Sea and intensify into a cyclonic storm on August 30, they predicted. The depression is currently moving West-South West over northeast Arabian Sea away from the Indian coast. This may however temporarily and marginally intensify over north east Arabian Sea on August 30.
