According to law, every taxpayer who is registered under GST should maintain records pertaining to this tax at his/her address of business. It is incumbent on the owner/proprietor of the business, person/agency who operates a godown where goods are stored and even transporter must maintain records that are required by GST authorities.
The rules also state that every person/business owner who has registered under GST should get the relevant accounts duly audited by a CA (chartered accountant/cost accountant) if the turnover in an FY is more than Rs 2 crore. Let’s see how one can track the payment status of GST.
How to track GST payment status
The entire process of tracking GST payment status can be done online. One can log on to the GST portal and check the payment status. One has to click ‘Services’ tab and then ‘Payments’ and then ‘Track Payment Status’. One has to type in the GSTIN (a 15-digit Goods and Services Tax Identification Number given to each taxpayer) and CPIN (Common Portal Identification Number).
The other way is to enter the GST portal and subsequently click ‘Services’ tab, then ‘Payments’ section and then ‘Challan History’. The CPIN can be used to search.
Downloading GST payment receipt
Once you have checked the payment status, you can easily download the payment receipt. You can also take a printout of the same and keep it in your record files.
Basically, one has to log into the GST portal and click on the following tabs in sequence – ‘Services’, then ‘Payments’ then ‘Track Payment Status’ and then typing in the GSTIN and CPIN. Having completed these steps, one should click ‘View receipt’. This will offer a glance at the details of the GST payment.
