New Delhi: Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday slammed the BJP-led Centre for organising the last rites of former PM Manmohan Singh at Nigambodh Ghat. He added that it was an insult to the Ex-Prime Minister.
Taking to X, the Congress leader observed that the country became economic powerhouse during his tenure and his policies support the poor in the country. “Dr Manmohan Singh ji has been insulted by the present government by performing his last rites today at the Nigam Bodh Ghat. He was the Prime Minister of India for a decade, during his tenure the country became an economic superpower and his policies are still supportive of the poor and backward classes of the country, he said.

“Till date, respecting the dignity of all former Prime Ministers, their last rites were performed at authorized burial sites so that every person could have the last darshan and pay homage without any inconvenience. Dr. Manmohan Singh deserves our highest respect and a memorial. The government should have shown respect to this great son of the country and his proud community,” the former Congress President added.

Earlier in the day, Manmohan Singh, was cremated in Delhi’s Nigambodh Ghat with full state honours. Many top dignitaries from the country and abroad, including President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Dhankhar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were present. The Former Prime Minister’s funeral pyre was lit by his eldest daughter, Upinder Singh. Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and the foreign minister of Mauritius, Dhananjay Ramful, were among the foreign dignitaries who paid tributes to the Former Prime Minister.
