New Delhi: West Bengal governor C V Ananda Bose has strongly criticised the state government, alleging that a lack of timely action has contributed to the rise in rape cases. His remarks come in the wake of outrage over the alleged rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl in the Jaynagar area of South 24 Parganas district.
“The increase in rape cases can be attributed to the absence of timely action. The inept handling of the rape and murder that occurred at RG Kar Medical College by the West Bengal government is encouraging similar horrific incidents to recur in the state. The government should recognise that a stitch in time saves nine,” the governor stated in an interview with PTI on Saturday.
‘There appears to be no remedy for violence’
“Under the current government in Bengal, there appears to be no remedy for violence. That is quite concerning,” he added. Bose further emphasised that convincing and decisive action against perpetrators by the state government would be crucial in combating heinous crimes.
“Otherwise, it will be tantamount to encouraging rape and violence in the state. This reflects poorly on everyone involved. It is high time that the state government acknowledged the enduring truth that prevention is better than cure,” Bose concluded.
One arrested in alleged rape-murder case
On Saturday, locals set fire to a police outpost and vandalised vehicles following the discovery of the minor’s body in Jaynagar. Police have reported that one individual has been arrested in connection with the rape and murder case.
The girl had been missing since Friday afternoon, prompting her father to file a police complaint later that evening. Her family and neighbours alleged that she had been raped and murdered, claiming that the police provided only a “perfunctory response” to the initial complaint. In protest, demonstrators ransacked the Mahismari police outpost, set it ablaze, and drove officers back more than a kilometre in an attempt to escape the violence.
