Gorakhpur: Three Nepalese nationals were killed and seven others were injured in a tragic road accident late Friday night in Gorakhpur. The injured are currently receiving treatment at the district hospital. All of them were returning after taking a holy dip at the ongoing Mahakumbh in Prayagraj.
The accident occurred on the Gorakhpur Link Expressway under the Bansgaon police station limits. The pilgrims’ Scorpio vehicle crashed into a tractor-trolley from behind. The high speed of the vehicle caused the accident. The tractor-trolley was loaded with sacks. After receiving the information, police reached the spot and, with the help of local residents, rushed the injured to the district hospital. The bodies of the deceased were sent for post-mortem examination.
Pilgrims killed in crash
According to reports, ten Nepalese pilgrims had travelled to Prayagraj on Wednesday for the Mahakumbh. After completing their pilgrimage, they were returning home when the accident occurred. As they reached the Gorakhpur Link Expressway in the Bansgaon area, their Scorpio rammed into a tractor-trolley moving ahead, completely wrecking the vehicle. One person sitting in the front seat and two women seated in the middle died on the spot, while seven others were injured.
The deceased have been identified as 45-year-old Parshuram, 42-year-old Vakilni Devi and 42-year-old Harihar Devi, all residents of Balwa Chowk, Kanchanpur, Nepal. The injured include Lalu Devi, Upendra Yadav, Jeetu Yadav, and Mukeya from the same locality.
Gorakhpur expressway not open yet
It is believed that the accident happened due to the high speed of the vehicle. The Gorakhpur Link Expressway has not been officially opened yet, but people are already using it for travel due to its smooth roads and shorter route. Locals said that the Scorpio’s speed caused it to collide with the tractor-trolley, leading to the fatal accident. The absence of reflectors on the tractor-trolley further contributed to the crash, as the vehicle was not visible to approaching traffic.
