New Delhi: A heartbreaking double tragedy unfolded on East Coast Road (ECR) on Saturday afternoon when a 20-year-old girl was killed in a bike accident, followed by her college mate, who was riding the bike, taking his own life by jumping in front of a speeding bus, a report by Times of India mentioned.
The victims were identified as S Yogeshwaran, 20, from Uthiramerur, and E Sabarina, 20, from Madurantakam. Both were third-year engineering students at a college in Padalam near Chengalpet. They were returning to campus after a visit to Mamallapuram when their bike was struck from behind by a Puducherry Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) bus at the Poonjeri village junction around 12.30pm.
Friends since school
Sabarina, who was riding pillion, fell beneath the bus, while Yogeshwaran was thrown off the bike. The TOI report further mentioned that he sat beside Sabarina’s lifeless body for a few moments before taking her in an autorickshaw to a hospital about 500 metres away, mistakenly believing she had merely fainted from her injuries.
Five minutes later, doctors declared her dead. After standing in shock for a moment, he left the hospital. As staff were discussing how to notify Sabarina’s family, he ran onto the busy ECR and jumped in front of a bus travelling from Chennai to Puducherry, resulting in his immediate death.
Authorities noted that the two had been friends since school and continued their education together at the same engineering college. The Mamallapuram police have registered two separate cases and arrested the PRTC drivers, Paramasivam and Arumugam, on charges of negligent driving.
