New Delhi: A 36-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday by the Ghaziabad police after he allegedly harassed and compelled an Urdu teacher to say ‘Jai Shri Ram’. Not stopping at this, he allegedly pushed him out from an elevator at a residential society. The teacher had gone there to take private tuitions on Tuesday.
The incident was reported at Panchsheel Wellington in Ghaziabad. Lipi Nagaich, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Wave City, was quoted as saying by The Indian Express that the police have arrested the accused, identified as Manoj Kumar, who is a resident of the society.
After a complaint filed by the Urdu teacher Mohammad Alamgir, the accused was booked under sections 126 (2) (punishment for wrongful restraint), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 351 (2) (punishment for criminal intimidation), and 351 (3) (criminal intimidation) of Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the police said.
What exactly happened
In his complaint, the teacher alleged that the accused initially stared at him in a “strange manner” when they saw each other on the ground floor around 5 pm while taking the lift. Kumar asked the teacher where he was going. Alamgir told Kumar that he gave lessons in Urdu to a student at a flat on the 16th floor. After he said this, Kumar allegedly asked him to chant “Jai Shri Ram”.
Alamgir remained mum and as he looked away, Kumar got aggressive. The teacher said he was pushed out of the lift when the elevator stopped on the first floor. Kumar called another resident and asked him when Muslims had been allowed into the society. Alagmir alleged that he was prevented from going to the 16th floor, and the residents asked me to leave the society.
The police said they have launched a probe into the incident and are trying to identify others involved. The ACP told the news outlet that during police interrogation, the accused said he had doubts about the complainant. The accused claimed that when he asked some questions, the complainant responded in an inappropriate manner, which led to his aggression, the police added.
