New Delhi: When I went to meet Robert Masih in Connaught Place, Delhi, I expected to meet someone who, despite being of Indian origin, would be fully immersed in European ways. However, within moments, this illusion vanished. Dressed modestly and speaking softly, Robert Masih did not fit the image of a typical European politician. It’s hard to believe that this humble man has been elected twice as a senator from Barcelona, Spain. In a city with only a handful of Indians, Masih garnered over six lakh votes—an extraordinary testament to his popularity.
From Punjab to Spain: A Thrilling Journey
Born in the Gurdaspur district of Punjab, Robert Masih grew up in a modest family. At the age of 18, he left home and wandered for a while, eventually settling in Rishikesh to live as a monk. However, a shift in perspective led him to Lucknow, where he tried his hand at journalism. In 2005, fate brought him to Spain.
When Masih arrived in Barcelona, he had no acquaintances and didn’t even know the local language. But his humble nature and a strong desire to help others quickly won people over. His growing network and goodwill eventually paved the way for his remarkable political journey to the Spanish Senate.
Service During COVID-19 and Recognition by the Indian Government
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Robert Masih provided meals to over 45,000 people, delivering food door-to-door. His selfless service gained widespread recognition across Europe. For his humanitarian efforts, the Government of India honored him with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman.
Expressing gratitude to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Indian government, Masih shared his dream of uniting the Indian diaspora across Europe to strengthen India-Europe relations. His wife, Martha, adds that he is always available to help, even at odd hours—a quality he attributes to India, where politics is seen as a means of public service, not just a profession.
‘Father of Cricket’ in Barcelona
In a city globally renowned for football, Masih has introduced cricket to the local community. Tapping into the Indian diaspora’s passion for the sport, he established over 100 cricket clubs in Barcelona. His vision is to foster a sports exchange program between India and Spain, where Spanish football coaches train in India, and Indian cricket coaches introduce the sport in Spain.
A Life of Service and Leadership
Robert Masih’s journey is one of struggle, service, and triumph. From a small town in Punjab to the Senate of Spain, his life story proves that determination and a genuine desire to serve can overcome any obstacle. With a vision to strengthen cultural and diplomatic ties between India and Europe, Masih continues to inspire countless individuals with his dedication and humility.
“For me, politics is not a job but a means to serve society,” says Robert Masih, whose values and commitment make him not just a leader but a beloved figure across Europe.
