From backdoor policy maker to Delhi CM – Atishi’s meteoric rise in AAP

New Delhi: As the Aaam Aadmi Party leader and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced to tender his resignation soon after coming out of jail in connection with Delhi Excise case, there were speculations about who would new CM of Delhi. Following meeting of Kejriwal with party MLA and other senior leaders, Arvind Kejriwal proposed the name of Atishi, which was supported by other party leaders.

Athish has emerged as the party’s choice of replacement of Arvind Kejriwal as Delhi CM. From playing a crucial role in the party’s policy formation, to the Delhi CM post, Atishi has covered a long distance in just 10 years.

What is Atishi’s education qualification?

43-year-old Atishi was born in New Delhi on 8 June 1981. She did her schooling from Springdales School in Pusa Road before completing her graduation in History from Delhi University’s St. Stephen’s College in 2001. She went to the Oxford University and in 2003 for her master’s degree in History on a Chevening scholarship. Later, in 2005 she also went to Magdalen College, Oxford.

During her career with AAP, Atishi started in the party’s policy formation wing in 2013 before being appointed as party’s in-charge of Goa unit in 2020. Atishi was contested 2019 Lok Sabha elections from East Delhi’s constituency. Although, she lost the election to BJP’s Gautam Gambhir by marked her strong debut in the electoral politics.

Within a year, she was fielded as the party candidate for Delhi Assembly elections in 2020 Delhi from Kalkaji seat. She managed to win this seat by defeating BJP’s Dharambir Singh by a margin of 11,422 votes.

Atishi elevated as minister as AAP plunged into crisis

She emerged as preferred choice of Kejriwal as the party plunged into leadership crisis after its two ministers- Satyendra Jain and Manish Sisodia were sent to jail connection with different cases. She was inducted into Delhi cabinet alongwith Saurabh Bharadwaj.
