Ahmedabad: With the latest case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) case detected in a four-year-old boy, the total number of HMPV cases reported in Ahmedabad within the last ten days to five, and six cases statewide.
The four-year-old boy was admitted to Zydus Hospital for medical attention on January 13th after showing symptoms of cough, cold and fever. Tests conducted at Zydus Hospital on the same day confirmed the HMPV infection.
“Today (Wednesday), a four-year-old male child was detected with HMPV infection. The boy, a resident of Krishnagar in the city, was admitted to Zydus Hospital on January 13 with cough, cold and fever,” Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation medical officer of health Bhavin Solanki said.
This latest case follows Ahmedabad’s first HMPV case of the season, reported on January 6th. The increased awareness of HMPV stems from a recent outbreak in China. However, it’s crucial to remember that, as stated by Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda earlier this month, HMPV is not a new virus; it was discovered in 2001 and has been recognised globally ever since.
Despite the minister’s reassurance, the recent surge in cases has understandably raised public concerns. HMPV, a member of the Paramyxoviridae family closely related to Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), is a viral pathogen causing respiratory infections across all age groups.
Transmission occurs through respiratory droplets produced by coughing or sneezing, as well as through contact with contaminated surfaces or direct contact with infected individuals.
The first HMPV case in Gujarat was reported in Ahmedabad’s Chandkheda area, involving a two-month-old infant. Fortunately, that child has since made a full recovery and has been discharged from the hospital.
