New Delhi: Former Foreign Minister and senior Congress leader Natwar Singh passed away late on Saturday night at the age of 95.
Natwar Singh had been ill for a long time and was undergoing treatment at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. His son, MLA Jagat Singh, and other family members were by his side.
Natwar Singh’s political journey
Natwar Singh was born on May 16, 1929, in Jaghina village, located in the Bharatpur district of Rajasthan. He was the fourth son of Govind Singh and Prayag Kaur. Singh pursued his early education at Mayo College in Ajmer and Scindia School in Gwalior.
He later graduated from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and studied at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge University. Singh also spent time as a visiting scholar at Peking University in China.
In 1953, Natwar Singh was selected for the Indian Foreign Services (IFS) and served in several countries, including China, New York, Poland, England, Pakistan, Jamaica, and Zambia. After three decades in the IFS, he resigned in 1984 to join the Congress party. That same year, he contested in the 8th Lok Sabha elections and was appointed as a Minister of State.
