New Delhi: The Congress on Monday dismissed the BJP allegations that no one was present to collect the remains of Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after the cremation, saying that the decision was taken after consultations with the bereaved family.
Issuing a statement, the party said that its top leaders met the family of the Former Prime Minister at their residence after cremation. “Senior Congress leaders did not accompany the family to gather and immerse the ashes of Shri Manmohan Singh ji out of our deference to the privacy of the family. After the cremation of our beloved departed leader, Smt. Sonia Gandhi ji and Smt. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra ji met the family at their residence,” Khera, chairman of the Congress’ media and publicity department, the statement said.
Amit Malviya slams Congress
The statement was issued a day after the BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya took to X, slamming the grand old party of not being present to collect the remains of Manmohan Singh. “Very sad to see that not a single member of Congress or the Gandhi family showed up to collect the remains of Dr Manmohan Singh Ji. For media attention and to politicise, Congress was present, but they were absent when it came to honouring him with dignity. Truly shameful,” he wrote on the social media network.
War of words on Manmohan Singh’s cremation
Notably, a war of words has been going on between the Congress and the BJP ever since the main Opposition party accused the government of disrespecting Manmohan Singh by holding his cremation at Delhi’s Nigambodh Ghat. However, the BJP hit back accusing the Congress of doing politics over the sad incident of the demise of the Former Prime Minister.
