Fisherman from Tamil Nadu killed, 3 missing after Sri Lanka naval vessel collided with Indian boat

Ramanathapuram: A  fisherman lost his life after a Sri Lanka Navy patrol ship collided with an Indian fishing boat in Katchatheevu island early on Thursday, August 1. According to local sources, four fishermen from Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu were missing as their boat capsized after being rammed by a Sri Lankan Navy vessel. After learning about the incident, Rameshwaram fishermen and their families are staging protests.

An Indian fisherman killed in Sri Lankan waters 

“Out of the 4 Indian fishermen who were on board the vessel, 1 lost his life after the mechanised boat he was on collided with a Sri Lankan Navy patrol ship at mid-sea and another is missing. 2 fishermen have been rescued and were taken to Kankesanthurai. A search is ongoing for the missing Indian fisherman, say officials.

India summons Sri Lankan Acting High Commissioner in New Delhi

Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of External Affairs expressed their strong protest over the incident with the Sri Lankan Acting High Commissioner in New Delhi. MEA emphasized the need to deal with issues about fishermen in a humane and humanitarian manner.

It may be recalled that a massive protest was held by fishermen from Rameshwaram and neighboring districts in Tamil Nadu last week over the arrests of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan navy.
