Chamoli: After being renamed as ‘First Indian Village’, the border village ‘Mana’ sees higher footfall of tourism this yatra season. This village, now included in the list of Vibrant villages, was earlier known as the last village of the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed this village as ‘first Indian village’ in 2022.
The world-famous Mana village in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, historically known as Manibhadra, has undergone a significant transformation. An influx of tourists has led to a rise in employment opportunities, revitalizing the area with increased facilities.
Increased inflow of tourists after ‘First Indian Village’ status
Located on the India-Tibet border, Mana village holds significant strategic and spiritual importance. Once known as the last village of the country, it has embraced a new identity as the ‘First Indian Village’ following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit. Situated near the Badrinath shrine, Mana was historically frequented by tourists, but the turnout was low. However, after PM Modi’s visit and the rebranding, there has been a substantial increase in tourists, particularly those on the Char Dham Yatra. This surge in tourism has created new employment opportunities for the residents of Mana and its surrounding areas.
Gradually converting into a tourist hub
About four years ago, the residents of Mana village were primarily focused on their daily routines. Today, however, the village is bustling with commercial activities. Nearly 60 homes have been converted into homestays and shops. Badrinath priest Ashutosh Dimri noted that the number of tourists has significantly increased in recent years, bringing much more activity to the area. He mentioned, “This village is known for religious tourism and is the most visited village in Uttarakhand. Seven out of ten visitors to Badrinath also come to Mana village.”
Visitors take the Swargarohini trekking route
Mana village lies along the path the Pandavas took to heaven after the Mahabharat war. Many visitors embark on the Swargarohini trekking route, retracing the Pandavas’ footsteps to heaven. Although challenging, the journey offers breathtaking experiences through rugged trails and waterfalls, creating lifelong memories for trekkers. This seven-month trek also has significant potential to boost adventure tourism in the region.
Historical significance of Mana village
In addition to its natural beauty, tourists are captivated by Mana village’s rich history, giving it a unique identity in Uttarakhand’s tourism sector. The Saraswati river originates from Mana and merges with the Alaknanda river before disappearing, later reappearing in Prayagraj. It is believed that the saint Ved Vyas wrote many texts in this village, where the river begins. Popular tourist spots include the Vedvyas cave, Bhim Pul, and Sapt Sarovar waterfalls. Mana is also known as a ‘curse-free’ and ‘sin-free’ village.
Enhanced status has increased curiosity among the visitors, boosting economy of the village
With the increase in tourists, locals have diversified into various businesses. Women are earning well by selling their handmade woollen clothes. After being renamed as ‘First village’ there has been a surge in tourist footfall, attracting not just Badrinath-bound pilgrims but also visitors from nearby towns like Joshimath and Peepalkothi. Pitambar Molfa, the village head, says, “New status has sparked curiosity among visitors and brought economic benefits to the community.”
