New Delhi: A case has been registered against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal at Haryana’s Shahabad police station over his recent statement alleging that the Haryana government was poisoning the Yamuna River. The FIR was lodged on Tuesday based on a complaint by Jagmohan Manchanda, a resident of Kurukshetra and an advocate.
The development comes a day before Delhi is scheduled to go to polls where AAP is contesting against BJP and Congress. Kejriwal has faced heightened criticism from BJP leaders, who accuse him of making irresponsible and misleading statements aimed at spreading fear among the people of both Delhi and Haryana.
Charges against Kejriwal
The FIR has been registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)
– Section 192 – Provoking others with the intent to incite a riot.
– Section 196(1) – Promoting enmity between different groups based on religion, caste, language, or race.
– Section 197(1) – Acts detrimental to national unity.
– Section 248(a) – Knowingly making false accusations against an individual.
– Section 299 – Deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious sentiments.
According to the complaint, Kejriwal’s remarks not only hurt religious sentiments but also attempted to incite tensions between the two states. Manchanda further alleged that Kejriwal, along with other AAP members, made the provocative statements to “create unrest” for electoral gains.
The FIR came after Kejriwal accused the BJP-led Haryana government of “deliberately contaminating the Yamuna” and that “many would die” because of this. He claimed that the BJP was engaging in “dirty politics” by disrupting the national capital’s water supply.
“BJP people in Haryana are mixing poison in the water and sending it to Delhi. If people in Delhi drink this water, many will die,” Kejriwal had alleged in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He further claimed that the contamination was so severe that even water treatment plants could not purify it. “The poison that is being mixed in the water cannot even be cleaned in water treatment plants. For the safety of the people of Delhi, the water supply has to be stopped in many areas,” he added in his post.
