New Delhi: As six rounds were fired at three-time MLA Baba Siddique, two hit the former Maharashtra minister on the chest while a stray bullet hit 22-year-old Raju Kanojia, a man who was coming back from a fruit juice centre, in his leg.
Kanojia is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mumbai. He will not be able to be in action for the next two months. Kanojia was quoted as saying by NDTV that he regrets the fact that he won’t be able to contribute to his sister’s wedding that falls in February next year. “My sister’s wedding is in February. I won’t be able to do much,” said Kanojia as he laid down on his hospital bed.
He added that when the shots were fired, it seemed firecrackers were being burst. Kanojia said he felt like a cracker had exploded on my feet. But when he saw his leg, he found blood oozing and there was total chaos and confusion around him. The crowd ran helter-skelter.
People shouted ‘there’s been a firing’
Kanojia told the news outlet that people were shouting ‘there’s been a firing, there’s been a firing’. He limped on one leg and somehow made it to a temple in the vicinity. After this, some people took him inside and then he was taken to a hospital, said Kanojia to NDTV.
The shooting took place outside the office of Baba Siddique’s son Zeeshan in Bandra between 9:15pm and 9:30pm on Saturday. The Mumbai Police suspects gangster Lawrence Bishnoi behind the killing.
The suspected assailants Gurmail Baljit Singh and Dharmaraj Rajesh Kashyap were nabbed soon after the shooting. The third accused, Shiv Kumar, gave police the slip. He is still at large. Kumar and Kashyap hail from Gandara village in Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh. According to sources, they had gone to Pune after Holi to earn money. The third accused, Singh, is from Haryana.
Another accused in the case – Pravin Lonkar – was produced before a Mumbai court which remanded him in police custody till October 21. He is accused of recruiting two of the three individuals who allegedly shot at Baba Siddique. The police are also hunting for Pravin’s brother, Shubham Lonkar, who posted on social media that the Bishnoi gang had taken the responsibility for Baba Siddique’s killing.
