New Delhi: India and US have taken a major step in strengthening security in the Indian Ocean by agreeing to jointly build sonobuoys. These advanced devices are used to detect submarines deep in the ocean and will significantly enhance Indian Navy’s operational capabilities.
This agreement was announced on January 6, during the visit of US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan to India. The visit aimed to elevate defence and technological cooperation between the two nations to a new level.
The partnership involves America’s Ultra Maritime and India’s state-owned Bharat Dynamics Limited. For the first time, the two countries will collaborate to manufacture sonobuoys based on American designs.
What are sonobuoys?
Sonobuoys, also known as sonar buoys, are sophisticated equipment that can detect submarines by listening to underwater sounds. They are deployed by aircraft, ships, or submarines and provide real-time data, making them crucial for maritime security operations.
With their ability to enhance the Navy’s situational awareness, sonobuoys play a vital role in tracking submarine activities and safeguarding maritime zones.
Strategic importance of sonobuoys
This collaboration comes at a time when the Chinese Navy has been increasing its presence in the Indian Ocean region. Experts from both countries believe the joint production of sonobuoys will bolster India’s maritime security while deepening defense ties between India and the US.
The agreement is seen as a strategic move to maintain balance and counter China’s growing influence in the region. By leveraging advanced technology and strengthening operational readiness, this partnership aims to ensure peace and stability in Indian Ocean.
