Excise policy: Obtained required sanction to prosecute Arvind Kejriwal, CBI tells Delhi court

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday informed a special court that it has obtained the required sanction to prosecute Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and AAP MLA Durgesh Pathak in an excise policy-linked corruption case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The CBI submitted this before Special Judge Kaveri Baweja, who had earlier granted CBI 15 days of time to get the required sanction to prosecute Kejriwal and Pathak in the corruption case.

The judge fixed the matter for further hearing on August 27.

The CBI had earlier secured sanctions to investigate Kejriwal, Pathak in the corruption case.

Kejriwal is currently lodged in judicial custody in Tihar Jail in corruption case. He was also arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in an excise policy-linked money laundering case in which the Supreme Court granted him interim bail on July 12.

The CBI earlier filed a supplementary chargesheet before the court naming Kejriwal, Pathak and others as an accused in the corruption case. Besides Kejriwal and Pathak, the CBI has made P Sarath Chandra Reddy, non-executive director of Aurobindo Pharma, Amit Arora, director of Buddy Retail Pvt Ltd, alleged hawala operator Vinod Chauhan and businessman Ashish Mathur accused in the excise policy-linked corruption case in its chargesheet.

The CBI earlier had filed a main chargesheet and four supplementary chargesheet in the corruption case in which former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha and others have also been charged.

Kejriwal was first arrested the ED in the money laundering case on March 21 and later the CBI arrested him in the corruption case on June 26.

Kejriwal’s plea challenging his arrest, grant of bail in CBI case is pending before apex court

Kejriwal earlier challenged his arrest in the corruption case before the Delhi High Court, which upheld his arrest. Kejriwal had also moved a bail plea before the High Court, which directed him to approach the trial court. Kejriwal has challenged both the orders before the Supreme Court, which on Friday (August 23) deferred hearing on his pleas till September 5.
