Excise policy: Delhi court takes cognisance of charge sheet against Arvind Kejriwal in CBI case

New Delhi: A special court on Tuesday (September 3) took cognisance on a supplementary charge sheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Durgesh Pathak and others in connection with alleged irregularities in the formulation and implementation of the now-defunct Delhi Excise Policy.

Special court issued production warrant against Kejriwal

Special Judge Kaveri Baweja said that there was sufficient evidence against Kejriwal and the other accused to proceed against them in the case and issued a production warrant for Kejriwal and summoned Pathak for September 11.

The court also extended the judicial custody of Kejriwal till September 11 in the corruption case.

The CBI earlier had informed the court that it has obtained required sanction from concerned authorities to prosecute Kejriwal and Pathak in the excise policy-linked corruption case. The central agency had earlier secured sanctions to investigate Kejriwal and Pathak in the corruption case.

The CBI recently filed a supplementary charge sheet in the excise policy-linked corruption case before the court naming Kejriwal, Pathak and others as an accused in the corruption case. Besides Kejriwal and Pathak, the central agency has made P Sarath Chandra Reddy, non-executive director of Aurobindo Pharma, Amit Arora, director of Buddy Retail Pvt Ltd, alleged hawala operator Vinod Chauhan and businessman Ashish Mathur accused in the excise policy-linked corruption case in its charge sheet.

The CBI earlier had filed a main charge sheet and four supplementary charge sheet in the excise policy-linked corruption case in which former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha and others have also been charged by the central agency.

Kejriwal, who is currently lodged in Tihar Jail in judicial custody in corruption case, was first arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in an excise policy-linked money laundering case on March 21 and later the CBI arrested him in the corruption case on June 26. The Supreme Court granted Kejriwal interim bail in the money laundering case and his bail plea in the corruption case is currently pending before the apex court.
