New Delhi: A special court on Friday (September 13) issued the release order for Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal after the grant of bail earlier in the day by the Supreme Court in an excise policy-linked corruption case registered by the CBI.
Kejriwal’s advocates furnished a bail bond of Rs 10 lakh, with two sureties of like amount
Special judge Rakesh Syal passed the release order after the advocates representing Kejriwal filed a bail bond of Rs 10 lakh with two sureties of the like amount before the court.
A top court bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan granted regular bail to Kejriwal in the corruption case on furnishing a bail bond of Rs 10 lakh, and two sureties of like amount.
Justice Bhuyan concurred with Justice Kant on grant of bail to Kejriwal
Justice Bhuyan concurred with Justice Kant on grant of bail to Kejriwal, however, he differed with Justice Surya Kant on Kejriwal’s plea challenging his arrest by the CBI in the corruption case.
While Justice Surya Kant held that there was no illegality in the arrest of Kejriwal by the CBI, Justice Bhuyan questioned the timing of arrest of the Delhi Chief Minister by the CBI and said the aim of the agency was to frustrate grant of bail to him in the excise policy-linked money laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Apex court imposed similar conditions on Kejriwal imposed by the top court while granting him interim bail in ED case
The top court, while allowing Kejriwal’s plea for bail, imposed the similar conditions imposed by the top court in the money laundering case while granting interim bail to Kejriwal on July 12.
The top court on July 12 referred Kejriwal’s plea challenging his arrest by the ED in the money laundering case and granted him interim bail in the money laundering case till adjudication of his plea by the larger bench of the top court. A trial court earlier granted Kejriwal regular bail in the money laundering case on June 2o.
Kejriwal, however, continued to remain in jail as he was arrested by the CBI in the corruption case on June 26.
Kejriwal was first arrested by the ED on March 21
Kejriwal was first arrested by the ED in the money laundering case on March 21. The Supreme Court granted him interim bail on May 10 for campaigning in the Lok Sabha polls and he surrendered before the authorities concerned on June 2 and since then he has been in jail.
