Excise policy: Delhi court extends Arvind Kejriwal’s judicial custody till September 2 in ED case

New Delhi: A special court on Tuesday extended till September 2 the judicial custody of Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Admi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal in an excise policy-linked money laundering case.

Kejriwal was produced before court through video-conferencing

Special Judge Kaveri Baweja extended the custody of Kejriwal after he was produced before the court through video-conferencing on the expiry of the judicial custody earlier granted by the court.

The Supreme Court on July 12 granted Kejriwal interim bail in the money laundering case, however, he continues to be in judicial custody in the money laundering case as he is yet to furnish the bail bond in the case.

Kejriwal is currently lodged in judicial custody in Tihar Jail in corruption case

Kejriwal is currently lodged in the judicial custody in an excise policy-linked corruption case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the alleged irregularities in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi Excise Policy.

Apex court granted Kejriwal interim bail in money laundering case on July 12

Kejriwal had moved the apex court against an order of the Delhi High Court rejecting his plea challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the excise policy-linked money laundering case. The apex court, while granting Kejriwal interim bail on July 12, referred his plea to a larger bench, saying that certain legal questions raised by him in his plea challenging his arrest in the money laundering case by the ED need to be considered by a larger bench of the apex court.

High Court recently dismissed Kejriwal’s plea challenging his arrest in CBI case

Kejriwal also challenged his arrest in the corruption case before the Delhi High Court, which rejected his plea Kejriwal’s plea and upheld his arrest by the CBI. Kejriwal had also moved a plea seeking regular bail in the corruption case, however, the High Court directed him to approach the trial court for bail in the case. Kejriwal has now moved the Supreme Court against the High Court order.

The ED arrested Kejriwal in the money laundering case on March 21 and later the CBI also arrested him in the corruption case on June 26.
