New Delhi: A special court on Wednesday (September 11) extended the judicial custody of Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal in an excise policy-linked corruption case till September 25.
Special Judge Kaveri Baweja extended Kejriwal’s judicial custody in the corruption case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after he was produced before the court pursuant to the order of the court.
Court earlier issued a production warrant for Kejriwal and summoned AAP MLA Durgesh Pathak for September 11
The court had earlier, while taking cognisance of a supplementary charge sheet filed by the CBI against Kejriwal, AAP MLA Durgesh Pathak and others, had directed issued a production warrant for Kejriwal and summoned Pathak and others for September 11.
The court had said that there was sufficient evidence against Kejriwal and the other accused named in the charge sheet to proceed against them in the case and issued a production warrant for Kejriwal and summoned Pathak for September 11.
Pathak, who appeared before the court was granted bail by the court on Wednesday.
CBI earlier filed a supplementary chargesheet naming Kejriwal, Pathak and others as accused in corruption case
The CBI had earlier filed a supplementary charge sheet in the corruption case naming Kejriwal, Pathak and others as an accused in the excise policy-linked corruption case. Besides the Delhi Chief Minister and AAP MLA Pathak, the CBI has made P Sarath Chandra Reddy, non-executive director of Aurobindo Pharma, Amit Arora, director of Buddy Retail Pvt Ltd, alleged hawala operator Vinod Chauhan and businessman Ashish Mathur accused in the corruption case in its chargesheet.
The central investigating agency earlier had informed the special court that it has obtained required sanction from the authorities concerned to prosecute Kejriwal and Pathak in the corruption case. The CBI had earlier secured sanctions to investigate Kejriwal and Pathak in the corruption case.
CBI earlier filed a main and four supplementary chargesheet in corruption case
The CBI earlier had filed a main chargesheet and four supplementary chargesheet before the special court in the excise policy-linked corruption case in which former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha and others have also been charged by the central agency.
Kejriwal is currently lodged in judicial custody in corruption case
Kejriwal is currently lodged in Tihar Jail in judicial custody in corruption case. He was first arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in an excise policy-linked money laundering case on March 21 and the CBI later arrested him in the corruption case on June 26. The Supreme Court on July 12 granted Kejriwal interim bail in the money laundering case. The top court has reserved its verdict on Kejriwal’s bail plea in the corruption case.
