Eight kanwariyas die of electrocution in Bihar’s Hajipur, probe on

Hajipur: Eight kanwariyas were electrocuted to death while some others were injured when the vehicle, fitted with a DJ, they were travelling in came in contact with a high tension wire in Bihar’s Hajipur district on Monday, police said.

The incident took place in the wee hours of Monday. The kanwariyas, after concluding their pilgrimage during the month of Shravan, were part of a procession that included a tall DJ fitted onto a truck. Because of its tall height, the DJ setup got entangled in an 11,000-volt wire in Sultanpur village under the industrial phase police station, SDPO Om Prakash said.

Eight of them died of electrocution while some others were injured in the incident and are undergoing treatment at a hospital, he said, adding further investigation into the incident is underway.

Responding to a query about the following of safety regulations during such kanwariya processions, the police officer said the police and strict administration are actively taking measures to keep them in check and spread awareness.
