Mumbai: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday ordered immediate removal of Maharashtra DGP Rashmi Shukla. The poll panel also asked the state Chief Secretary to hand over her charge to the next senior most IPS officer in the state.
The poll body has also directed the Chief Secretary to send a panel of three IPS officers by 1pm on November 5 for appointment as Maharashtra DGP.
The move comes days after complaints from the Congress and other parties for the same.
Before 2009 Assembly polls too, the EC had ordered removal of then DG AN Roy. S Chakravarty was appointed as his replacement. Then Congress and NCP were in power, while BJP and Shiv Sena were in the opposition.
Opposition welcomes the move to transfer Rashmi Shukla
While welcoming the move, the Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Assembly, Vijay Wadettiwar, said EC’s decision proves that the state government had extended Shukla’s tenure to get undue benefits during the elections.
