DU student killed, 4 injured after car crashes into guardrail

New Delhi: A 19-year-old Delhi University student was killed after his car collided with a guardrail near Rajghat in Delhi on Thursday. The student, identified as Aishwarya Pandey, was on his way back from Gurugram after celebrating his birthday with four friends, who were also injured in the accident. The guardrail pierced through their Hyundai Venue vehicle and caused the crash.

Pandey, a first-year BA student at Deshbandhu College, was rushed to LNJP Hospital, where he was placed on ventilation support. Despite efforts to save him, he late passed away.

According to the initial reports, the group of students had been consuming alcohol. A senior police officer said, “Pandey had celebrated his birthday on Wednesday by hosting a party for his friends. He had rented the car, and while returning to Delhi, he handed the keys to his friend Aishwarya Mishra to drive.”

Pandey, seated behind the driver, suffered severe injuries in the crash.

Originally from Etawah, Uttar Pradesh, Pandey had been living in a hostel in Laxmi Nagar, East Delhi. Both of his parents had passed away—his father, who worked for a private company, succumbed to an illness, while his mother, a teacher, had died in a road accident, according to a family member.

Mishra, who also hailed from Etawah, was critically injured and was admitted to a private hospital in Delhi.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North Delhi), MK Meena, said that a case had been filed under sections 281 (rash driving) and 125(a) (causing hurt by endangering the life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
