Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said that her government will hand over the rape and murder case of the doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). She said that if police fail to solve this case at the earliest she would be forced to make this decision.
CM Mamata Banerjee urges police to solve case at the earliest
Speaking at a public gathering in Kolkata, the West Bengal CM urged the police force of her state to solve this case at the earliest. She said, “I want the Police to arrest the accused as early as possible. If the Police are unable to solve this case by Sunday, then we will not keep this case in our hands, we will hand it over to CBI.”
She said that even though the success rate of CBI is not that good in such cases, she will still handover the case to them. This she would do because, people of Bengal might be thinking that the Kolkata Police are not investigating the case independently. The CM also met the family of the victim at their house on Monday at around 12:20 pm.
In fact through her statement Banerjee has given less than a week’s time to the state police to catch the culprit and bring him to justice. Earlier, she had made another bold statement saying that “the accused will be hanged if needed”. She also described the incident as “despicable” and said the young doctor’s death felt “like a personal loss.”
Earlier Banerjee had said that she had issued directions to take the case to a fast track court. Though she said that she wanted the accused to be hanged, she was not pro-capital punishment in general. But added that the accused should be given the strictest possible punishment.
Doctor’s rape-murder at medical college
The second-year post graduate student at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was found dead in one of the hospital’s rooms. She had reportedly been raped and then killed. Post mortem report revealed that she had suffered grievous injuries and was bleeding from her eyes and private parts.
Police have arrested a volunteer who works alongside Kolkata Police personnel for the crime. He was identified as Sanjay Roy. He was held barely 6 hours after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was set up to probe the matter. The 35-year-old was presented in court, where no lawyer agreed to represent him. The accused was sent to 14-day judicial custody. Further investigations are on in the case.
