Chennai: With Diwali festivities approaching, omni bus companies have drastically increased fares, sparking widespread outrage among travelers. The usual fare for a sleeper seat from Chennai to Madurai, typically ranging from Rs 800 to Rs 1,000, has skyrocketed to Rs 2,000- Rs 2,500, with some companies charging an astonishing Rs 4,900 per person for bed facilities.
This exponential hike has affected fares for popular routes, including Chennai to Nagercoil (Rs 1,200 to 4,500), Tirunelveli (Rs 3,800), Coimbatore (Rs 4,200), Tuticorin (Rs 3,300), and Trichy (Rs 1,600 to Rs 4,900).
Diwali Delight Turns Costly: Omni Bus Fare Hike in Chennai
Commuters relying on omni buses for long-distance travel are severely impacted. Despite the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation’s announcement of special buses and trains for the four-day holiday, many passengers prefer omni buses. Taking advantage of this, most omni companies have hiked fares uncontrollably.
Travelers are demanding government intervention to regulate fares and prevent exploitation during festive seasons. Citizens are calling for investigations and penalties against companies engaging in fare theft. The lack of oversight and regulation in the omni bus industry has raised concerns.
As Diwali approaches, commuters are bearing the brunt of unchecked profiteering. The State Transport Corporation’s special services may provide some relief, but the omni bus fare hike has already caused significant distress among travelers.
The public has expressed frustration, citing previous instances of price gouging during festivals. “Every festive season, omni bus companies increase fares arbitrarily. It’s unacceptable,” said one commuter. Another traveler added, “The government must take action to regulate fares and protect consumers.”
With thousands of travelers affected, the issue has become a pressing concern for authorities. The government’s response will be crucial in addressing the public’s grievances and ensuring affordable travel during the festive season.
