Madurai: A disturbing report from Madurai Aravind Eye Hospital has revealed that four children lost their eyesight due to Diwali cracker-related accidents, with their eyes completely removed. This tragic incident is part of a larger trend of firecracker-related injuries across Tamil Nadu, where over 100 people have been treated for injuries.
According to hospital officials, 104 patients received treatment for explosion-related injuries, including 10 with corneal tears. The hospital has urged parents to exercise caution during festivities, ensuring children’s safety around firecrackers.

Statewide, the fire department reported 304 people injured in minor firecracker accidents, with 128 calls received on Diwali day alone. Additionally, fire accidents occurred in 31 locations due to other reasons, injuring 544 people.
The Madurai Aravind Eye Hospital statement read, “Despite awareness campaigns, explosion accidents continue to occur. ” The hospital’s experience suggests a broader issue across Tamil Nadu, with hundreds of eye hospitals potentially treating similar cases.
