Agra: A woman police officer in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, conducted an undercover operation dressed as a tourist to evaluate women’s safety in the city during late-night hours. As part of her initiative, she also called the emergency number 112 to assess the response time of the emergency services. On Friday, September 27, Sukanya Sharma donned a white shirt and black jeans while visiting various critical areas, such as Agra Cantt Railway Station, MG Road and Sadar Bazar.
Agra Police announced her operation on the social media platform X, saying, “Sukanya Sharma, dressed in plain clothes, travelled alone in an auto to visit and inspect crowded and sensitive areas. She tested the emergency security system by acting as a victim and using UP112 (the emergency helpline) to assess its effectiveness.”
ACP tests emergency response
Sukanya Sharma, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), took an auto-rickshaw outside Agra Cantt Railway Station while pretending to be a tourist and requested police help. In a city renowned for the Taj Mahal, the 33-year-old officer said she feelt unsafe due to the deserted road and explained that she needed help because it was late at night.
The helpline operator advised the officer to find a secure location while collecting details about her whereabouts. Shortly afterward, Sharma received a call from the women’s patrolling team, informing her that they were on their way to help her.
Undercover mission
However, Sharma then said that she was testing the emergency response system and reassured them that they had successfully passed the test. She continued her operation by taking an auto-rickshaw to further evaluate women’s safety. After agreeing on the fare, she boarded the vehicle without revealing her true identity.
During the journey, she casually inquired with the driver about women’s safety in the city. The driver responded that the police had conducted a background check on him and said that he would soon be required to wear a uniform while driving his auto. He safely dropped her off at her destination, successfully passing the safety assessment.
