New Delhi: Dhanteras, the first day of Diwali, is traditionally marked by buying gold, silver and other valuable items to invite prosperity. It falls on the thirteenth day of the Hindu lunar month of Kartika. The word “Dhanteras” combines “Dhan,” meaning wealth, and “Teras,” referring to the thirteenth day.
Traditionally, people purchase precious metals such as gold and silver, as it is believed that these bring good luck and prosperity. In recent years, the custom has extended to buying electronic items, household goods, and other valuables. Dhanteras is a busy shopping day, with families often buying new kitchenware or even vehicles, as purchasing anything valuable is thought to invite wealth into their homes.
The rituals of Dhanteras include cleaning and decorating homes with rangoli and diya lamps to welcome Goddess Lakshmi. In the evening, people light a diya outside their main door, symbolising the removal of negativity and the welcoming of positive energy.
